Payam Akhavan

Professor Payam Akhavan is Senior Fellow of Massey College, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, with prior appointments at the Universities of McGill, Yale, Oxford and Paris Nanterre. He is a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, Senior Advisor to Canada's Ministry of Global Affairs, and was the first Legal Advisor to the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (1994-2000). Professor Akhavan has also been a counsel and advocate before the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the European Court of Human Rights and the Supreme Courts of Canada and the United States. He currently serves as Special Advisor on Genocide to the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (2021).
